Ahhhh. I've missed this. Finally, after a long year of misfortune, that has just flown by in a whist of time, the Sasol Leeus management could get active again.
Many an opportunity was squandered in the course of the season, but the very fact that it went south and the circumstances that made racing grind to a halt, also meant that there was plenty of time to contemplate what direction the team would be going in the near and not to distant future. Making plans for years and seasons to follow, we figured, wasn't wise, really, and would not get us any further. After all, this habit of planing far ahead wasn't working in cycling. It might work for the Peoples Republic of China, but it most certainly didn't work when managing a pack of lions.
Anyway. This meager season and a half, however, also coincides with a few of our riders, that have been vital to past successes and cornerstones of the Sasol Leeus team for many a year, having reached the end of their careers. This means, that they have signaled the management, that they would either consider retirement or a last adventure somewhere else in the cycling universe; one last contract before saying good bye to active professional cycling.
It is time, to leave behind the nostalgic memories of Birhan Kigen or a Rico Weiss sprinting to victory winning classics and jerseys alike. It is time to say good bye to a powering Banele Gulwa spliting the wind at the front of the peloton head down no matter what with the highest wattage imaginable. It is fair to say, we've reached the end of an era. The lion pack will change faces.
But who could blame the old chaps? The team and staff at Sasol Leeus in Cape Town and Germany in France and the Czech republic will always remember them as the heroes they are - the team legends that led the Leeus charging at division 2 - Oh glorious times. However, whether Kigen, Weiss and Gulwa will stay as trainers at one of the Leeus training base-caps or move on for one last contract can not be said at the moment. Only time will tell, but talks are surely under way already.
As far as the new season is concerned, Sasol Leeus are currently recruiting new talents and experienced riders and looking to get a rejuvenated but well-balanced squad ready for the new season to reach for the stars once more, write history and to become legends themselves.
Keep updated to follow every movement on the transfer market. There might be one or more announcements following soon.
Lekker blessed Sunday everyone!
